North Rockland spent the entire game in chase mode because Suffern was never more than a goal away from another demoralizing run. It was a one-possession game well into the second half, but the Mounties closed with a flurry, posting a 21-13 win on Tuesday at McConnell Field.
The previous four meetings between the rivals were decided by a single goal.
“It’s definitely the biggest game of the season for us,” said Suffern attackman Billy Mahecha, who had three goals and five assists. “They’ve been our rivals since we were little kids playing each other on Tuesday and Thursday nights.”
Will Joiseus legged into open space in the closing minutes of the first quarter and gave the Mounties a 5-1 lead, but Jack Guerra sparked a shift in momentum with a faceoff win and pole goal.
It was suddenly a 5-4 game after Steven Apicella opened the second with back-to-back goals.
The next five goals belonged to Suffern.
“We have a lot of talent and it’s hard for teams to cover all of us,” Mahecha said. “When they left somebody open, we scored. We’re getting better at making the extra pass and if we do that more, we’ll be even harder to cover.”
