In a quick, ninety minute game that saw scoring in only three innings and just one extra-base hit, KTI defeated Temple Israel New Rochelle 6-1 for the B-Division Championship.
KTI's Logan Asnis did not allow TINR a hit over the first three innings, though he survived a bout of wildness in the first. Logan walked the bases loaded but coaxed a fly ball to left to end the inning. Then KTI took an early lead in the bottom of the first, scoring a single run on two infield singles and an RBI groundout.
New Rochelle strung together a couple of soft liners to center and an infield hit to start the fourth inning. But KTI's Asnis stepped up his game just like in the top of the first, refusing to allow TINR an RBI hit. The best New Rochelle could manage was a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1.
In the bottom of the fourth, KTI took a lead they would never relinquish. A leadoff line drive to center was stretched from a single to a double. Two groundouts later and the score was KTI 2, New Rochelle 1.
New Rochelle pitcher Alan Raines pitched a solid game; most of the hits he'd allowed were seeing-eye grounders or Texas Leaguers just over the infield. But in the bottom of the fifth, KTI broke the game open. JP Zendman singled with one out. After Asnis popped out to right field, it looked like Raines would keep the game close. But Alan Zverin lined one up the middle. Marty Levy blooped one into right field, scoring Zendman. Ben Levy stroked his third hit of the day, a line drive into left field, to score Zverin. Following a walk, Jason Matos smacked a 2-RBI line drive before Raines could retire the side.
After the fifth inning, neither team really threatened to score. New Rochelle managed to place runners on first and second with one out in the ninth inning, but they just couldn't get the clutch hits they needed. Asnis closed out the B-Division Championship with a popup to short and a flyout to center.
KTI says they want to take on A-Division champs Greenburgh in a non-sanctioned bout before the weather gets too cold. Whether or not that game gets played, congrats to KTI on their 15-2 championship season. They'll definitely get to face Greenburgh in 2011.
