Halfway Home

This week marks the season's halfway point for most WHSL teams, so it's fair to post the results of our preseason poll and ask you a new question.

Back in March, we wondered whether a doublewall or composite bat helps a hitter at the plate. Over half of WHSL voters are certain that an advanced bat improves a hitter's performance. Only one in six voters think such a bat makes no difference.

At last winter's manager's meeting, the league expanded both the list of legal bats and the penalty for using an illegal bat, so it's clear there are strong feelings on both sides. If you have any questions about whether the bat you want to buy is permitted in the WHSL, just click on the Quick Link on the left side of the home page.

Our next poll asks you to predict the future and tell us which team is most likely to finish the regular season with the league's best record. The two teams currently on top, Greenburgh Hebrew Center and Temple Israel Center--White Plains, met in the 2006 final, with TIC-WP winning the Championship. Both these teams have only one loss in 8 games so far.

The other two teams in our poll are among the five with only 2 losses. Larchmont is a perennial title contender, last winning the title in 2007. Larchmont's losses have come to the aforementioned Greenburgh and to last year's champion Woodlands (who were beaten earlier this season by TIC-WP).

Finally, we wonder whether up-and-coming Westchester Jewish Center is ready to make The Leap to the top of the standings. Perhaps the WHSL's youngest team, WJC lost their first game against Rye and since then have only been stopped by Larchmont.

Of course, we can't ask which team WILL have the best regular season record because so many other teams remain in the hunt, including Harrison (the team that beat Greenburgh) and B'nai B'rith (the team that beat TIC-WP) at 6-2, plus Woodlands and Chappaqua with 5 wins each. So we'll ask which of the four teams listed has the best chance to get the #1 seed in the WHSL playoffs that begin on August 16.
