Playoffs Are Set

The top 16 teams have been ranked by their regular-season finish and slotted into a single-elimination playoff bracket, which you can find by clicking on the link at the top of the WHSL home page.

Eighty-seven people voted in our midseason website poll asking which team was most likely to finish with the league's best record. Tied with 29 votes were Greenburgh and WJC, who finished in third and eighth place, respectively. The #2 finisher in the poll, Larchmont, ended up fifth in the standings. TIC-WP only received 10 votes, but they finished strong against Harrison and WJC to grab the #1 seed in the playoff tourney.

We've put up a new poll for the playoffs: Do you think one of the top three seeds will win the championship? Will Woodlands repeat? Will Greenburgh finally go all the way? Will TIC-WP maintain its 2009 pace through the playoffs? Or will one of the other 13 qualifiers take the title? Let us know what you think.

Four quick points of information:

1) You should be proud of yourselves. After New York's second-wettest June and July on record (edging 1928 but behind 1975), you managed to play 305 of the 306 games on the 2009 WHSL schedule. Special props to Woodlands, who squeezed in three games on the last day of the season. KTI and Scarsdale did not play their scheduled game. Giving both teams a loss, however, does not affect the final standings.

2) Lately, the league office has heard reports of illegal bats being brought to fields. Managers, please check your team's equipment before the first playoff game to make sure you comply with league rules. And be a Mensch if the opposing manager asks to check your bats before the game.

3) Please remember that in the playoffs, the visiting team is responsible for bringing one of the game balls.

4) Playoff dates are as follows (we are off Labor Day weekend, 9/6):

8/16-opening round
8/23-quarter round
8/30-semi round
9/13-Championship
9/27-Make-up for playoff rainout if necessary

2009 has been one of the most fun and competitive years the WHSL has ever had. Let's keep it going through the playoffs!
