About Us

Not all sports programs are created equal and we've worked with some of soccers best to establish an academy that stands out from the crowd.

Our programs are designed to develop Australia’s soccer talent and are delivered with expertise spanning over 20 years across Europe and the Middle East. Together with our experience, we continuously work to modernise our coaching curriculum to keep up to date with the demands of todays game.

Our philosophy is based on the freedom to make mistakes as a way to enhance learning. Our coaches encourage situations where there is a high risk of ‘failure’, giving positive and motivational feedback. Our aim is for our players to feel confident in trying new skills, push through perceived barriers, and to be fearless of making errors, thus creating an environment where they can truly learn and embrace their full potential.

Our Programs

The 12th Player Academy is primarily a technical training program focussing on developing game intelligence for the transitional sub-junior age groups.
Focussed on 8 to 12 year olds, the 12th Player will focus on all the skills required to prepare the players for entry into NPL. From time to time the academy will enter tournaments or arrange friendly matches against other clubs/academies but these are not the focus of the academy due to the complexity of the players and their club commitments. At the academy, our philosophy is built around creating a culture where the kids have fun while developing towards equitable results. This is not a traditional training session that is delivered at a club.

Who We Are

The founder, Luis Miguel started The 12th Player with a vision to provide age-appropriate sports and skills development programs for children and adults alike.  Having worked with Arsenal FC for over 20 years as a Coach and Technical Director, he went on to develop soccer programs for schools and academies in Australia, Europe and the Middle East.  As a passionate advocate for providing learning opportunities to all, he's also been recognised for his programs for children with learning challenges, at-risk youth as well as children with disabilities.

In his younger days, Luis represented his native country Portugal and though he could've continued his career as a player, he knew from the start coaching was where his heart was at. Coaching was never the second option for him if it didn't work out for him as a player, or something he could pick up when he retired from being on field.. With a passion for continuous improvement and influenced by the greatest coaches the game, he set out to develop youth soccer in Australia that focuses on delivering the game intelligence and tactical skills seen in the professional levels of competition across the globe.

Since being in Australia, Luis has spent time meeting various clubs. He has recognised the opportunity to provide unique soccer programs that create an environment where participants can develop their skills and natural abilities, whilst being encouraged to utilise their decision-making skills and learning that they cant fail when they try.
