Women in sports face many obstacles today, such as lower pay, fewer media coverage, and different injuries than their male counterparts. Many female athletes have been involved in peaceful protests, such as social media campaigns, playing strikes, and even federal lawsuits to address the inequalities around the globe, but many go unheard. 

The number of women who currently play or closely follow sport events is steadily increasing. Women’s participation and performance still vary significantly by country and sport. Women’s sports are accepted throughout the world today.

Developed countries pay more attention to diverse careers such as sports, but this is still a dream for many women in underdeveloped countries like India, Pakistan, Thailand, Bhutan, African countries, and more.

Despite a rise in women’s participation in sports, a significant disparity in participation rates between women and men is still evident. 

These disparities are prevalent globally and continue to hinder equality in sports. Many institutions and programs remain conservative and do not contribute to gender equity in sports. Lindsey Caroline Vonn is an American former ski racer, who is one of the only two female skiers to win four World Cup overall championships (along with Annemarie Moser-Pröll). She also holds eight World Cup season titles in the downhill discipline, five titles in super-G, and three consecutive titles in the combined. Serena Williams is an American professional tennis player. She is widely regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time. Altogether, she has been No.1 for 319 weeks, which ranks third in the Open Era (behind Steffi Graf and Martina Navratilova). Kerri Walsh Jennings, Volleyball player

 

Kerri Lee Walsh Jennings is an American professional beach volleyball player. She played with partner Misty May-Treanor for most of her career, and they were regarded as one of the greatest beach volleyball teams of all time. Along with her partner, she has won three consecutive Olympic gold medals from 2004-12, and 21 consecutive Olympic matches. As of 2016, she is the beach volleyball career leader in both career victories and career winnings with 133 victories and $2,542,635 in winnings.

Wilma Rudolph, Sprinter 

Wilma Rudolph was an African-American sprinter. She has acclaimed the fastest woman in the world in the 1960s and was the first American woman to win three gold medals in a single Olympics. She holds the record for the 100-meter at 11.2 seconds and the 200-meter at 22.9 seconds. In the early 60s, she was among the most iconic black women in America and abroad.

Jacqueline Joyner-Kersee is an American retired track and field athlete. She is considered among the all time greatest athletes in the heptathlon as well as long jump. She founded the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation in 1988, which is dedicated to providing youth, adults, and families with athletic, academic lessons and the resources to improve their quality of life.

She is well-known for her deft play, particularly her goal-scoring diving headers. Steffi Graf is a former professional tennis player from Germany. She is the only tennis player to win all four Grand Slam singles titles as well as the Olympic gold medal in the same calendar year, which led her to earn the Golden Slam. She is also the first tennis player to have won all four Grand Slam tournaments. The Women’s Tennis Association ranked her world No. 1 for a record 377 weeks (more than 7 years). In 1999, she retired at the age of 30 while she was ranked world no. 3. In 2004, she was inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame.

Mariel Margaret Hamm-Garciaparra is an American former professional soccer player. She played as a forward for the United States women’s national soccer team from 1987 to 2004. She is also a two-time FIFA Women’s World Cup champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist. Until 2013, Hamm held the record for most international goals scored by a woman or man, and she is currently in third place, behind former teammate Abby Wambach and Canadian striker Christine Sinclair. She has a total of 158 international goals and holds 276 international caps.
